Satoshi Nakamoto’s original paper is still recommended reading for anyone studying how Bitcoin works.
The abstract of Satoshi’s White paper clearly sums up what this new system was all about:
“A purely peer-to-peer version of electronic cash would allow online payments to be sent directly from one party to another without going through a financial institution.”
